The EU will soon evaluate the Single Use Plastic Directive and it’s time for plastic cigarette filters to be added to the blacklist. These filters not only contain microplastics but also harmful chemicals, polluting our streets, beaches, forests, rivers, and oceans, causing immense damage to humans, animals, and the environment.
👉 Facts:
- Every year, 6.6 billion filters are discarded in the environment in the Netherlands.
- Cigarette filters are globally the #1 item in litter.
- One filter pollutes up to 1000 liters of water with nicotine, alongside toxins and microplastics.
- Smoking with a filter is more harmful than without: microplastics settle deeper in the lungs.
In 2025, we will build a Europe-wide coalition to achieve a ban on plastic cigarette filters. We begin with monitoring in the Netherlands to map the problem and convince policymakers.
Monitoring in short:
- Duration: 6 weeks
- Frequency: Once a week
- Time: Approximately 20 minutes
- Period: From April 21st to mid-June

Sluit je aan en strijd mee tegen de vervuiling door plastic sigarettenfilters!
De EU beslist binnenkort over de richtlijn voor single-use plastics, en het is tijd dat ook het plastic sigarettenfilter op de zwarte lijst komt. Deze filters bevatten niet alleen microplastics, maar ook schadelijke chemicaliën en vervuilen onze straten, stranden, bossen, rivieren en oceanen en brengen immense schade toe aan mens, dier en milieu.
👉 Feiten:
- Elk jaar belanden 6,6 miljard filters in de natuur in Nederland.
- Sigarettenfilters zijn wereldwijd de nummer 1 in zwerfafval.
- Eén filter vervuilt tot 1000 liter water met nicotine, naast gifstoffen en microplastics.
- Roken met filter is schadelijker dan zonder: microplastics nestelen zich dieper in de longen.
In 2025 bouwen we een Europees brede coalitie om een verbod op plastic sigarettenfilters te realiseren. We starten met monitoring in Nederland om het probleem in kaart te brengen en beleidsmakers te overtuigen.

- Duur: 6 weken
- Frequentie: 1 keer per week
- Tijd: Ongeveer 20 minuten
- Periode: Van 20 april tot half juni
